You might think this sounds naïve, but it’s true. To survive and even thrive personally, you only need to give your attention and focus to your immediate world, the one you can personally affect – your finances, your business.
If you don’t let the woes of the world drag you down mentally, you can be in a position to uniquely thrive in times like these.
Here is an inspiring reference point:
The late Sam Walton, when asked his opinion of the 1991 recession, said,
“I’ve thought about it, and decided not to participate.”
In 1990 and 1991 Wal-Mart, Sears and the SNP 500 share prices were in a dead heat. Wal-Mart chose to take an aggressive posture, investing in physical assets to strengthen their growth foundation and in intangible assets to assertively promote their brand and offerings. Sears, on the other hand, decided to cut investments without a cursory examination of the ramifications. The result: within only two years Wal-Mart’s share price TRIPLED while those of Sears and the SNP remained flat. And as you know, no competitor has recovered to catch Wal-Mart since.

08/Oct/2008 3Hi Darren,
This article is excellent and in need of being published. I have spoken to so many people who are now panicking about the economy. As a matter of fact, my neighbour was just talking to me the other day. She had been to the bank trying to change her investments and the bank told her not to panic. All this for a television program on Sunday evening called “60 Minutes.” I told her not to panic, they are trying to scare everyone. This article will definitely be beeficial for her.
Sincerely,

08/Oct/2008 4Hi Darren,
Excellent piece.
In sales it is very important to have a positive mental attitude, especially during these tough times.
I have been telling myself “I can handle this” and it is unbelievable the power those thoughts have had on me.
Keep up the excellent work!
Sincerely,
Terry Fain

08/Oct/2008 5Dear Darren,
We enjoyed and agree with your article. For millions of business owners their focus of attention must be on their customers. We would like to bring something of ours to your attention which we feel is very important and reflective of these challenging economic times. Our newest book, The Constant Customer, is a commonsensical, blinding flash of the obvious as to what is required to build the approprite environment to nurture a customer-responsive relationship and have your customer return again and again and again. It is avilable through our publisher HRD Press or directly from us. Thank you.

08/Oct/2008 6Your comments serve as incredible encouragement in a time where everyone seems to want to wallow in misery and fear. I hope everyone that reads your article is challenged to find a way to take advantage of these tough economic times and set a new strategic course for long-term success. We all tend to get lazy in our approach to building our business when times are good. Perhaps these new challenges will force us to roll up our sleeves and find new ways to thrive. I for one can’t wait to get started.
Thanks!

08/Oct/2008 8Darren:
As always, great job of encouragement & inspiration. Our reality seems to always be what we decide to focus our attention & energies on. We all need to be aware that we create our reality accoerding to the level of our beliefe in God, our perception of our world & our view of what WE can accomplish through OUR actions. For the past 9+ years, I have been living a life as an example of knowing no boundaries. WHat I mean by that is that in life (as a general rule), we set our boundaries of what we can accomplish & what we cannot accomplish. Fair enough that I will never flap my arms & fly, but physical limitations aside, what we can or cannot accomplish is decided in our own minds & hearts. I live this every day & have met many, many people who inspire me & letme see this truth.
Keep up the great work. I hope for us to be able to cross paths some day.

Thru the company I am with and reading your magizine,I have a new and exciting Hope. Thank you. I have stopped waiting for the sky to fall. I bought a plaque that reads” Life is not waiting for the storm to pass, it’s learning to DANCE in the rain.”

10/Oct/2008 14There is so much opportunity for success right now. Everyone is running scared thinking that we are going to have another depression. When I think of the people that came out of the depression, realized the opportunities they had and became wealthy my first thought is maybe that’s not such a bad thing. I have quit watching TV and listening to all the panic driven talk. Like the Sam Walton story, we need to invest in the future and not wallow in the present pessimistic mood.

10/Oct/2008 15Thank you Darren! You are absolutely correct about watching less TV and filtering what we see and hear. I cut out TV and e-mail for 21 days several years ago during a spiritual fast and found, I was much more focused and productive during that period. After that time, I found I could more easily distinguish between fact and faction in media. Now, I find myself once again turning my TV off more than it is on, because there is so much sensational “ratings driven” fiction mixed in with the facts, it’s making me sick! Fortunately, I have found some powerful antedotes in the Success magazine, Success.com, good spiritual leaders etc.
Thank you again for sharing this simple yet very effective medicinal advice! I am sharing it with everyone who will listen in hopes of inoculating others against the illness of fear and desperation that appears to be infecting us nationally and internationally.

Then there is Dara Torres, the 41-year-old mother and Olympian who competed in Beijing against women young enough to be her children.
