Jim Rohn, September 17, 1930 – December 5, 2009

Jim Rohn - picture I took at a private lunch I had with him.

Jim Rohn - picture I took at a private lunch I had with him.

Today is a very sad day.

No amount of positive thinking will change this.

The most influential man in my life, second only to my biological father, died today.

This morning at 2:30AM Pacific time my mentor, my philosophical father, Mr. Jim Rohn passed away.

I owe much of my personality, grit and determination to my dad. But when my own parents hardly recognize me it is because Jim took over and carried me beyond where my parents could.

Jim cemented my philosophical foundation and nourished my mind with ideas and ambitions never before imagined. Jim chiseled my character seminar by seminar, tape by tape, book by book, then CD by CD, hour by hour.

Jim emboldened my belief, in me and in my most daring dreams. When I fell and was bloodied, Jim was there with encouraging words to help me get back up. When I didn’t think I could go on, Jim convinced me I was stronger than I imagined. When I wanted a short cut, Jim reminded me aren’t any. Even when I got too caught up in trying to achieve and succeed, Jim compelled me to leave room to live, to laugh and to love.

All that I am and all that I have become is due in large part to one man, the man I lost today. I have never lost anyone who has meant more to me than Jim Rohn has meant to my life. This is a new experience for me.

I know I am not the only one who lost a friend, teacher or mentor today. Jim Rohn positively influenced the lives of millions of people all over the world.

Many people try and take this occasion to celebrate the deceased life. That is fine and I will, maybe tomorrow, but today my heart hurts.

I am trying to make my life count and when I am gone I want to be missed. Jim Rohn’s life counted, immensely. Now that he is no longer walking amongst us, he is missed, deeply… very deeply.

There is some good news to this, for you. I spent well over a 1,000 hours with Jim. 99% of that time was with him instructing me via his books, CDs or DVDs. Much of the material I studied was recorded even before the time I first met Jim. The same material, the same relationship I had with Jim is available to you, right now and forever more—in the work he has left behind. The good news is that Jim’s legacy and his mentorship lives on and is eternally available to you and to millions more.

Jim also lives on in me and in my never ending commitment to pass along and perpetuate his profound teachings and philosophical insights to millions more. That is my commitment to Jim and to you.

He taught us how to be human. Wisdom is the first word I think of when I reflect on Jim Rohn. Jim & I received the CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame award from NSA on the same night in 1985 at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Washington DC. I felt his presence more this month than in a long time due to the CDs in Success magazine. I drove to Phoenix from LA and listened to hours of CDs! It was great re-living the wisdom from Jim Rohn.

Thank you also for continuing his work and extending his legacy. He left the world better than he found it.

[DARREN HARDY] Jim, you must be referring to one my favorite quotes of his: “Whether you stay six weeks, six months or six years, always leave it better than you found it.”-Jim Rohn And that he truly did!

My email was brightened by a rotation of 22 quotes from Jim until our signatures were standardized. Each communication I sent carried one of his wonderful messages with it. I’m going to revive the practice in his memory. Thank you for your thoughtful, personal post. I’m sorry for your loss, and ours.

[DARREN HARDY] There is no better way to honor his memory than by sharing his words of wisdom with others. Thanks for sharing this with us, Roy!

I first met Jim when I was 19 and lost … his words were key in inspiring me to source the courage to elevate my thinking and transform my life. Our first encounter was at a Tony Robbins Christmas party he was my “buddy” and we were asked to share a magic moment … he shared his moment with me which was a time where an audience of thousands sang a song for an audience of one (he was the one) … then it was my turn to share a magic moment … and I said, “it’s this moment right here and right now with you.” 13 years later I had the honor of speaking at the Success Symposium to open the days event and share the stage with Jim. Jim was unable to attend as he was not feeling well, but he called in and his radiant presence and vibrant spirit was with all of us – he was in our hearts. I had lost my voice that day, but my deepest joy and desire to share with the participants and express my gratitude for Jim’s impact in my life elevated my being above the momentary challenge of laryngitis and I experienced a miracle. That day, I felt as though my life had come full circle. Today, I celebrate Jim’s life with gratitude in my heart and a prayer on my lips. Jim, I am holding you in the most high. Infinite love and boundless blessings, xoxo.

[DARREN HARDY] Great story, Niurka. Warms my heart to hear these personal moments with Jim. Thanks for sharing it with us!

I first met Jim at an “Adventures in Achievement” seminar in Anaheim March 15th
1978. That night changed my life. I felt as thou he was talking directly to me when he talked about the major key to your better future is you. I was a new G.S.M for a Datsun store in Redlands and was in need of some major guidance. I got it that night and went from a somewhat negative person to a very positive one. I recruited many others to join “Adventures in Achievment” I was involved in many other seminars with Jim. I have most all of his C.D’s and DVD”s. I had the opportunity of meeting him again at the San Diego Convention Center on May 14 2001. I had him sign the notes that I took back in 78. It was a thrill to see him and speak to him after all of those years. A truly great man, I will miss him dearly.

Just last week, I sat down and wrote Mr. Jim Rohn a letter, telling him how profoundly he has affected me life. So much so, in fact, that I felt an overwhelming need to share it with him. I sealed the letter and had it ready to go out in today’s mail.

    I’m mailing it anyway.

Thanks to Jim Rohn, I know that success is what I attract by the person I become, and because of this, I am *already* successful because I work *every day* to be a better person. Mr. Rohn reminded me that my dreams are my lifeblood; that I can accomplish more than I’ve ever dreamed if I will just work steadily toward my goals; that the set of my sail is far more important than what winds may blow.

I’ve never seen one of his seminars and have yet to read one of his books (though, of course, I will); all I’ve learned from Mr. Rohn, I’ve learned from his audio programs, which are now vital to me and crucial to my success. One of the things I said in my letter was that I have not yet built the kind of network I require for my plans, but that – until I do – I count Mr. Rohn as one of my mentors. That will continue.

Thank you, Darren, for being one of the people to introduce me to Jim Rohn. I am a changed – and better – person as a result.

[DARREN HARDY] I’m so glad you went ahead and mailed the letter, even though by now he’s already read it! I’m sure he’d be happy to have you under his wing as well. Thanks so much for sharing your story with us.

Darren I send this to you.

I am so sorry for your personal loss. I read your words and I can hear this profound sadness and sorrow. It is rare to go through life with a mentor, you were blessed. The way you speak of him – I can hear your love, respect and truth about this man.

I once had a mentor – my father – he died recently and I will say this. When it happened I was beside myself , however as I begin to reflect this year, it is obvious that his death was a turning point for me. His death became an opportunity to be the next mentor, to turn my life up a notch, to honour his legacy and apply everything he did for me.

I saw the email yesterday from the Jim Rohn ezine people and my heart stopped.

My first thought was that one of my goals will not get accomplished. as an Herbalife distributor, I have worked long and hard to get my life in order and the business opportunity helped me more than anything, except for Jim, who finally convinced me, through his books, to get it all started. Jim had met Mark Hughes in the beginning and knew him before he passed on. In fact, I didn’t realize until a couple years ago that Jim had been very influential with helping many of the distributors in the network. It was my hope that would get to actually see him one more time. This time as a smashing success.

The I remembered the one time I did get to meet him in Colorado at an event he had made for the public. The tickets were 99$ and mine was 109$ because I got a parking ticket when I didn’t feed the meter. I didn’t want to miss a thing. I even got an autograph from Jim.

I remember sitting there dumbfounded. It was a look I am sure he has seen many times in his great life. People star struck into silence at his prescence. I wanted to show him that I could do it to.

Since then my own life has become dedicated to also helping people truly excel. I know there are big shoes to fill and I know there are plenty of others, but thanks to Jim, I know I have a place among them.

It won’t be easy but Jim’s message has been such a big part of my life, I can only wonder where I would be if I had not started reading his books when I did.

Thank you Jim, for everything you have brought to so many of us. And thank you Darren for helping us carry his torch to all of those who never got the chance to hear his message.

[DARREN HARDY] Scott, those are HUGE shoes to fill! But I know you can do it. Keep Jim close and you will truly excel in your endeavors.

    Darren,
I am sorry for your loss. My family prays for your family and Jim’s family. Take the time you need to deal with this, reflect, grieve, and pray. But as my first mentor,my Uncle Louie, once told me that the sadness of his death will go away but the happiness of your relationship will never go away. It is impossible for any of us who have listened, read, or met Jim to ignore his voice. You know the one that he left in our head. If I close my eyes, I can hear him talking, in his voice, in my head right now.

I too am saddened by his passing but even as I think of him passing that thought is immediatly replaced with a thought of something he has said to me through one of his tapes and I get a small smile on my face. We always think of a great thought right after the sad thought, that is how I know there is a God. He will not let me ever dwell on the sad thought of Jim Rohn he will cover that with a happy, loving, and caring thought of Jim. This is how it will be for you. This week as you deal with the passing of your friend and mentor, you will be reminded of the happiness you two shared by talking face to face with loved ones and his millions of friends. The baton has been passed as it has been for centuries; Shoaf to Rohn to Hardy to all of us and so on and so on.

    God Bless You!

I must shamefully admit I had not heard of Mr. Rohn before last Saturday. I was in my car traveling to and from a meeting in a nearby city and for the first time heard several audio talks that came on the Success Magazine cd’s. I was very taken with Jim’s manner of speech, his direct uncomplicated ideas, and his apparent passion for what he spent his life doing. I was profoundly affected by what I heard and I made the decision to study this man’s work. I had discovered two key resources that day, Mr. Rohn and Success Magazine and I knew both would play a big role in my business and personal life. I was a bit shocked when I checked Darren’s blog yesterday and couldn’t help but contemplate the synchronicity of what had happened. I was very saddened by the news and wanted to express my condolences to Darren and all that knew Mr. Rohn or had benefited from his passion. We are blessed to have the legacy his work that will help many like me, in the future. Thanks Darren for introducing me to Mr. Rohn.

Two years ago I started working with a very successful Realtor in the San Gabriel Valley of CA. He would always seem to find a way to get everything we talked about back to Jim Rohn. I would giggle at the way he admired this man. After about a year of giggling, he sent me home with CD’s, DVD’s and books from all of his different Jim Rohn weekends. I sat down and became inspired. All weekend, I took notes and rewound and re-listened, re-read and researched. I couldn’t help but think that all that I wanted to be could be mapped out already. A man I never met changed my life. I still feel the tears welling up in my eyes daily. It’s so upsetting.

Darren, I hope that you and yours are able to continually feel blessed with the time you were able to have with him.

I was stunned when I received the news in my email box this past Saturday. Just shocked that a man with such vitality and wisdom has passed on. My favorite saying of his is that we must work harder on ourselves than on our jobs. When I first heard that I felt shocked and asked myself “should I dare do that?”. I’ve always been taught to work hard at my job. Jim taught me it was vital that I worked hard on myself. When he said “when you work hard at a job, you make a living, when you work hard on yourself, you make a fortune” the light bulb clicked in my brain. Thanks Jim for the wisdom you taught me.

In 1970’s I was involved with Shaklee and someone gave me a tape called 3 basic laws. I was cleaning my garage one Saturday and decided to listen to it. I started the player and never did get to work on the garage that day. It changed my life. Over the years I attended several seminars and I have a great collection of his works. The last seminar was in Chicago. He was there along with Mark Victor Hanson and Fran Tarkington. What a time. I have written to Mr. Rohn and he has answered my letters with profound wisdom. I loved him and will miss him greatly.

What a sad day that was for the world, to lose a great thinker as he. Jim Rohn came into our family’s life about a year ago when, almost simultaneously, we received one of Jim’s books Twelve Pillars by Jim Rohn and Chris Widener from the TEAM leadership training system and we started receiving audios of Jim through Success Magazine. Very quickly our family, including all the kids, fell in love with Jim’s message, style and stories. The kids can be heard quoting his words often. He made us laugh and he made us think and he was truly special – a gentle man with a powerful message. We recently made plans to record an audio CD with Jim’s teachings for a specific project we are working on. We will now have to use the sixth sense to communicate with Jim! Definitely a life well lived. Thank you Jim.

Wow! This is amazing…here I am one of the very few whose life was NOT touched by Mr. Rohn while he was alive yet here..now..I sense a greatness and am awed at the outpouring of affection..love for this man! This is a strange place for me as well, Darren, but not because I share the grief you feel for losing an obviously huge part of your life but because having spent the better part of my life in personal development I never listened to or studied Mr. Rohn’s work…..now I sense his greatness and his legend and feel a loss for not having come to this sooner. Yet, as you so aptly stated, I can still benefit from his work via his legacy and so in essence he does truly live on, Darren! And, in that, I hope you find solace, cheer and peace! So..Mr. Rohn…here I am.. a new student for you and one who now has a tremendous amount of respect, eagerness and gratitude for you and about you and I have yet to start my study! My condolences to Mr. Rohn’s family and to you and yours Darren ….

I’m sure many can relate to the feeling of Jim Rohn as a Father figure but we can only imagine the profound loss that those closest too him must be experiencing.

I hope that they also have perhaps found some peace and acceptance over the many months that he was in failing health. His spirit is now free of the burden!

Personally, I will never forget having the privilege of spending a hour in conversation with Jim Rohn as I drove him to the airport after a speaking engagement.

When we got to the curb at departures his parting words were, ” I’m proud of you!”
I was overwhelmed. Profound, caring, well chosen, Fatherly words.

Listen to his voice and words, remember the conversations, and the message will always be that he has faith in our abilities and challenges us to achieve the greatness in all areas of life that we desire and deserve.

Now it really is up to us to live and continue to teach the message!

    dear Mr. Darren,
this past weekend when I heard the news about Mr. Jim Rohn, I was speechless. I’m quite young and I first heard Jim when I was 18 and about to make a very pivotal decision in my life, to serve our country or to go into network marketing. When I saw you this past weekend in Anaheim, I was comforted b/c I knew like Chris Widener and Anthony Robbins.. you upheld his legacy and for a little while I could remember him through you. I never got to see Jim personally though I hear him in my head everyday, everywhere, and in everything I do.. Seeing you and being mentored by you esp. through Success Magazine made me feel that much closer to the man. I too will become a personal development coach to someone someday and I would want nothing more than what Jim would always say.. “A piece of me goes with you today.” Mr. Rohn, you are truly missed but never ever forgotten. Thank you for your endless effort to pave the path for winners and for leaving us with so many teachers who continue to light the way. Baruch HaShem and Shalom.

    Dear Darren,

I’m so sorry for your loss. The memories you have of your mentor the GREAT Jim Rohn are beautiful. Mr. Jim Rohn was an extraordinary man – truly one and only or better yet one-of-a-kind. Thank YOU so much for opening your heart and sharing your memories with us.

I remember as if it was only yesterday, Saturday, July 12, 2008 – when I attended the SUCCESS Symposium in Anaheim. I was so excited that Mr. Jim Rohn was going to be speaking and then disappointed when I heard that he was not going to be attending because of his health. It was a memorable moment regardless because of the amazing words of wisdom that he spoke so passionately. I’m so glad that I wrote everything down word for word.

Thank YOU so much for making that memory possible! :-)

    With sympathy,

    Vanessa

Hi Darren, thanks again for your Success Audio CDs. It was during my driving time back and forth to work where I had the chance to listen to Jim Rohn. He definitely helped me implement reading into my daily life. I still remember his words, “you’ve got to read.” I have taken his advice and yours to get up a 1/2 hour earlier and study the book you are reading. I am on my fourth book since I changed my habits and thanks again to Jim Rohn and Success magazine.

I didn’t have a mentor until I decided it would be Jim Rohn. I remember Darren saying that if you don’t have a mentor in person, find someone you resonate with and study what they teach. Jim Rohn made the lessons of life simple for me. I was fortunate enough to talk to him and listen to him personally at an event.
His life impacted millions for the better, I know what I must do to honor his teachings.
